Personal Reflection

I am still interested on being a computer programmer, because there are many jobs out there, and there is a great program for computer science at Waterloo. As I researched before, there are more than 46 different types of occupations in the computer programming industry, and many are easily transferable because as long as someone has good math, computer, and communication skills, they are able to move from one career to the next. They can also choose which company they will like to work for because there is a growing demand for technology, and therefore will result in more jobs. In addition, I really do like the program at Waterloo for computer science. It is one of the top computer science programs in North America, and I would love to get in. I also love working with computers and hope that my computer programming career will be successful in the future. However, for the down sides of being a computer programmer is the competitiveness of the industry. Many young people are becoming smarter and smarter, and thus in order to remain competitive; one should undergo many trainings and certifications. Plus, they should strive to get valuable work experience and education in order to put themselves in front of others. Other than that, I still would love to be a computer programmer even though it is a very competitive industry.

What surprised me the most

For what surprised me about being a computer programmer, is that one would have to work some odd hours. I did not think that some programmers will have to stay up late at night in order to finish doing some coding. I also was surprised to find out that computer programming has such as wide range of salary; from $40 000 - $100 000 or more depending on which company and position you work for. Obviously Google would pay their workers more than a privately owned company. Lastly, I was surprised to learn that you could be certified in a computer language. I had thought that a computer language was just something that you could learn and use for your work. However, I did not know that there are actual certification lessons that will give you a certificate once you complete the course of a language. It reminds me of the languages that we speak every day.

My interests and skills compatability

For my interest, skills, and abilities, I believe that they will be suitable for a computer programmer. I am detailed-oriented which is why I usually get high marks on my school projects, and am very creative. I love creating new things, and enjoy using Illustrator and Photoshop for my artwork. I also am very dedicated to my job/work, and thus I am able to sit down for long periods of time. For example, during summative season, I am able to sit down for long hours in order to complete a project. In addition, I am great at math, and am honing in on my math skills. Plus, I love coding, and have been learning C++ since I was in grade nine, and Java starting in grade 10. Though my math skills and coding skills are not up to the skill level that I will need to have in order to find a job in computer programming, if I continue to work hard and study, then I will be able to achieve the skill level that I will need in order to be a computer programmer. Therefore, I believe that my interests, skills, and abilities are suitable for being a computer programmer.
