Why Karolina Chose Computer Programming
To Begin...

I have considered many occupations in the past, such as a teacher, lawyer, or a veterinarian. However, it was not until I entered high school that I started to consider occupations in the IT industry, primarily software programming. I decided that I would like to be a software programmer as my occupation, because there is a broad amount of jobs out there for software programmers, it matches my character traits, and is also something that I love to do.

Firstly, for a software programmer, there are a lot of different softwares that can be created, such as a household security alarm system, to Photoshop. Due to this wide range of software, software programmers are needed in almost every company out there, such as in the health industry, banks, households, computer programs, there are many jobs out there for computer programmers. Thus, this opens a lot more job opportunities for me, and due to the competitive job market, having a broader area of choices will allow me the freedom to choose the company that I want to work for, while getting a job soon after I graduate. With the growing IT industry, the software programmer job will become much more needed and wanted. Also, according to Statistics Canada, only 5 to 15% of computer science graduates are women. Therefore, due to me being a lady, it will also come to some advantage for me when I am applying for university and a job.
Secondly, I believe that a computer programmer will match my characteristics and personality. I am very creative, and love designing new things. This can be seen when I complete my Digital Media projects, I always make sure that my digital art work looks appealing and is very detailed. I am also very determined, and I love solving challenging problems. For example, I always participate in Waterloo Math contests, and have recently started to participate in the Waterloo computer contests too. I am able to sit down for long periods of time when I am dedicated to solving something. Therefore, I believe that my characteristics and personality will allow me to be successful as a software programmer.

Lastly, I love working with computers, and have been taking extra computer lessons outside of school. I already know that I want to go to the University of Waterloo, and have been trying to get myself involved in computer orientated opportunities too, such as me applying for a web developer volunteer position. Therefore, I chose to be a software programmer, because there are many jobs out there for programmers, it matcher my personality, and lastly, it is something that I would love to do with my life.
